Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League this past season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a massive summer of rebuild ahead of him right now.

The Red Devils are going through a rough patch and they will be hoping to get back to their perch soon enough.

Manchester United are in desperate need of reinforcements if they want to close the gap with rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Managers like Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal have failed to bridge that gap in the recent years and a lot of that has to do with the irresponsible recruitment from Ed Woodward.

The Manchester United chief has spent large sums of money on galactico signings instead of funding moves that will improve and balance the squad on a whole.

It is imperative that the Premier League giants get their recruitment spot on this summer. They are already without Champions League football next year and if they fail to get back into the top four next season, it could prove catastrophic for them commercially and in terms of appeal.

Here are five players Solskjaer should look to bring in this summer.

James Rodriguez

Manchester United are in desperate need of a specialist creator – someone who can unlock deep blocks, create chances from set pieces and add sharpness to the final third.

Juan Mata was that player when he was at Chelsea. At United, he has been a shadow of his past self and he needs to be upgraded on.

James’ loan spell with Bayern is over and Real Madrid are looking to move him on for a reasonable price this summer. United must look to capitalize and bring him to the club. Bayern had the chance to sign him for just €42m.

The Colombian was the best chance creator in Europe last year. He managed to fashion out 4 clear cut chances per 90 minutes during the 20-18/19 season. James Rodriguez‘ display in the Copa America so far shows that there is an elite creator in there.

Kalidou Koulibaly

The Napoli defender is one of the best in his position and Manchester United could certainly use his services.

The Red Devils conceded 54 goals in 38 Premier League games last year. To put it into context, Wolves, Leicester, Everton and Newcastle have all conceded less.

The likes of Man City and Liverpool have conceded just 23 and 22 goals respectively. That is the scale of improvement needed at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer must invest in a world-class defender and Koulibaly would be ideal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The Crystal Palace right-back has been linked with Manchester United this summer and it would be a perfect addition to their squad.

Ashley Young is past it and Dalot needs more time to adapt. Wan-Bissaka would be an immediate improvement for United on the right.

Also, Antonio Valencia has left the club this summer and Manchester United need a replacement.

The youngster is a superb defender and he is very good at driving forward with flair and power.

There is no doubt that his passing is erratic but he is only 21 and that will improve with time.

Wan-Bissaka averaged 3.7 tackles and 2.4 interceptions per 90 minutes last season. In comparison, Dalot averaged just 1.5 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per 90 and Ashley Young averaged 1.7 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per 90.

Edinson Cavani

Manchester United need someone to lead their line and the Uruguayan would be a great short term addition.

The likes of Rashford and Martial are world-class talents who seem to have lost their way. They could use some time away from the limelight. In the meantime, a proven goalscorer would be ideal for Solskjaer.

Also, Lukaku has been linked with a move to Inter Milan and if that happens, United will need a replacement/upgrade.

Cavani wants himself out of PSG this summer and at 32 he is likely to cost a reasonable fee.

The Uruguayan has been one of the most lethal goalscorers in Europe over the last few years. Cavani hasaveraged 93 minutes per goal last year.

He has scored nearly 300 goals for PSG and Napoli in the last 9 seasons.

Steven Bergwijn

Manchester United need pace and flair from the wide areas.

All of the top teams in the league have world class wingers at their disposal. Man City have Sterling and Sane, Liverpool have Salah and Mane, Chelsea had Hazard.

Manchester United are dependent on Lingard and Martial for their wide roles.

Martial is more suited to a central role and Lingard is simply mediocre in everything he does.

Bergwijn has been in sensational form for PSV this past season and he would freshen up Manchester United’s flanks.

He picked up 14 goals and 12 assists for his club last season and he is an accomplished chance creator.

The 21-year-old makes 3.2 dribbles per 90 minutes and 2 key passes in that time as well.
