What is eSports?

You may have heard the term ‘eSports’ being used in conversations frequently in the recent years. You may have also heard people planning to attend eSports conventions or streaming them in the comfort of their homes. So,

eSports is a multiplayer video game played competitively for spectators, typically by professional gamers. eSports competitions are some of the largest events occurring today. In fact, they gather more spectators than live action sports competitions like tennis, football and soccer.

These eSports events have multiple gaming competitions such as League of Legends, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Halo 5, and Heroes Of The Storm. The largest attendance at an eSports event was the League of Legends Final, 2014 in Seoul. Around 45,000 people attended the event and about 27 million viewed it online.

Ever heard of Twitch? Twitch is a live streaming video platform owned by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon. They stream all major eSports events and a few minor ones too. So don’t fret if you don’t get tickets to the latest eSports convention, you can always live stream it in the comfort of your bed on Twitch.

You might think that the job of a gamer cannot pay very well, considering the general consensus that gaming is nothing but twiddling your thumbs on a console while sitting all day. You’d be surprised to find that the total prize pool for 5 major game titles in 2017 was $78,095,474. Shocked much? Gaming is not as easy as it sounds. It requires excellent hand-eye coordination, increased brain speed, the ability to multitask well, and a high level of concentration. Not everyone has got what it takes to be a professional video gamer.

Wondering if eSports is an official sport?

eSports was included in the Asian Games as a demonstration sport as a test event and being pitched for the 2022 Games as a full medal sport because of its large presence in the entertainment industry among others.

The earliest eSports could be a part of the Olympic Games appears to be 2024, during the games to be held in Paris.

I for one, look forward to seeing eSports become an Olympic event!
